Excel 2007 and TM1 version 7.1

Post by mbach »

I am a stand-alone user of TM1 version 7.1 in my office.

TM1 Perspectives version 7.1 - old as it is - worked fine with Excel 2003, however we now use Excel 2007. TM1 7.1 doesn't work with Excel 2007, so...

- Is it possible to "edit/patch" TM1 7.1 to work with Excel 2007?
- Is it possible to buy an old - ~9.0 - version of TM1 that will work with Excel 2007?
- Is there another OLAP product similar to the basic stand-alone TM1 that will work with excel 2007, that is not too expense?

Any advice is appreciated!

Which bits of 7.1 aren't working?

Palo would seem to be the obvious alternative to look at if you want cheap/free OLAP functionality. http://www.jedox.com/index.php?id=1709

You should also evaluate Cognos Express. The Excelerator component is TM1, with nothing taken out, and XL2007 is fully supported. It's not free, but it's a lot cheaper than full fat TM1.

David and Paul, thank you very much for your helpful and quick responses. I am checking into your suggestions.

Regarding "Which bits of 7.1 aren't working? " probably more than I realize but what notice is that TM1 won't load smoothly with the add-in Excel feature, I have to skip over some of the macros, and the main TM1 menu won't display in the Excel ribbon

You'd find the same thing in 9.0, not that you could buy a 9.0 copy on e-Bay the way you could with some other retail software as you seemed to be suggesting in your original post. The licencing wouldn't allow that and you'd have to negotiate a price with IBM. In 9.0 you'll always get an error message in 2007 and the code in tm1.xla (as opposed to tm1p.xla) will be disabled; I'm not sure exactly what functionality that disables but none that I've come across to date. 9.0 does seem to work with 2007, it's just that the initial error message is annoying. The menu appears on the Add-ins ribbon. 7.x I have no idea about; it's been a lot of years since I've used that, and never with Excel 2007.

You'd really need to go for a later version such as David's suggestion of Cognos Express.

Alan, Thanks for the information and advice. Yes, I have downloaded Cognos Express and will likely / hopefully get my company to purchase a license.
