Perspectives hang when performing a slice or snapshot to Excel

Post by dougsmitty »

When slicing a cube view to Excel from TM1 Server Explorer, TM1 Perspectives opens and hangs, never returning the sliced cubeview.

Cognos TM1 10.2.2 FP5 32bit client
Excel 2016 32bit
Already tried this even though it says Excel 2010

Resolving the problem
Microsoft Excel 2010
1. Click the File tab, and then click Options.
2. Click Advanced, and then click to clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box in the General area.
3. Click OK.

That is indeed the most common cause. Other things to check:
- Make sure that you don't have multiple sessions of Excel open (check Windows Task Manager to confirm this); and
- Make sure that there is no dialog blocking the slice, notably this certifiable pain in the **** bull*** that Microsoft has inflicted on us. (Your vote and/or supporting comment to kill the thing will be appreciated.) I've had more than a few situations where people have complained that the slice hasn't come down only for me to ask them to click away from Cube Viewer and back on Excel only to reveal... yup, there it is, blocking the slice.

Also just to confirm, this is happening on all slices and not working for you on any?

Since we're asking the question... is this also the case with active forms and snapshots as well, or just slices?

Hangs for Slices, Snapshots, Active Forms also. None work.

Maybe its time to go back to Excel 2010 or 13

Using Excel 2016 64-bit as part of an Office 365 subscription-don't think your issue is Excel. I encounter the issue with the slice being sent to a window in the background requiring application switching per above comments but not hanging. I do remember my colleague experiencing something like this of 10.2.2 FP5 however. Have you got a copy of the 10.2.2 FP4 bin folder that you can switch with FP5 to test?

I installed on another computer and its working fine. Only diff is that this other computer is running windows 7

question I now have is on a Windows 10 -64 bit computer with Excel 32bit should I install the Cognos 32bit Client or 64bit client? is the 32bit / 64bit refering to the version of windows or version of office?

Office.

If you have 32 bit Windows you can only install 32 bit Office and must use the 32 bit TM1 addin.

If you have 64 bit Windows you can install either 32 bit Office or 64 bit Office, but must use the addin that matches the Office version that you've installed.

Downgraded Office 365 to Office 2010 and still hangs when slicing.

user has Windows 10 64bit with 2010 Office 64bit now.

Have other users with exact same computer with Windows 10 and TM1 client and slice works perfect so its some setting or issue on this one clients laptop.

When slicing Excel just hangs. there must be something blocking it from slicing into Excel from perspectives interface. I tried many things still stumped.
About to reformat the laptop but if anyone knows anything about this it would be helpful.

Thx

Just some random thoughts-have you used an external monitor-maybe a dialogue box off the visible area?
Pounding on Ctrl+C, Esc, - to try interrupt whatever is running?
Any other add-ins e.g. CAFE related? Had issues on previous versions with CAFE and Perspectives active within Excel.

they do have multiple monitors but when you slice perspectives freezes and you see the little mouse thing circling around and around. when you go to task manager it says the app is not responding.. usually it just slices it into excel and thats it.

The person next to this client has the same laptop/windows/excel and it works so something is different someplace. windows 10 Security issue ?

May be worthwhile turning debug on for perspectives-don't have the exact details handy now but hopefully a quick search will yield otherwise will try post tomorrow.

Does the user have any other excel add-ins loaded? If so try disabling them all and then testing again.
I remember TM1 having issues with certain other add-ins previously but I can't really remember the exact issues experienced or which add-ins caused it.

Here is what I use to debug the client - long shot but you never know.

Create a file called tm1p-log.properties in the user's Applix TM1 folder i.e. %appdata%\applix\tm1 with the following:

Code: Select all

log4j.rootLogger=DEBUG, R1
#Server Explore
log4j.logger.COrionMainApp=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CCubeView=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CubeViewGrid=DEBUG
log4j.logger.COrionTreeView=DEBUG
log4j.logger.COrionApp=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CMultiSelect=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CCreateSandbox=DEBUG
log4j.logger.loggerViewDimension=DEBUG
#Subset Editor
log4j.logger.CSubsetWnd=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetEntry=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetListProp=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetListBox2=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetListView1=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetRegExp=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSubsetSelByAttr=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CSingleSelect=DEBUG
#ISB
log4j.logger.CXLCtrlsApp=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CConnectServerDlg=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CViewCtrl=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CGetViewDlg=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CubeViewerISB=DEBUG
log4j.logger.ExcelReportPrintDPage=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CTM1Connector=DEBUG
log4j.logger.ExcelReportPrintIncludedSheetsPage=DEBUG
log4j.logger.CAutoExcel=DEBUG
log4j.logger.SubsetEditorIntLog=DEBUG
#Perspectives
log4j.logger.TM1Perspectives=DEBUG
log4j.logger.TM1Perspectives.MetaLogger=DEBUG
log4j.logger.TM1AF=DEBUG
log4j.logger.TM1ExcelAPI=DEBUG
log4j.appender.R1=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
log4j.appender.R1.File=ClientDebugLog.log
log4j.appender.R1.MaxFileSize=10 MB
log4j.appender.R1.MaxBackupIndex=50
log4j.appender.R1.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.R1.layout.ConversionPattern=%X{pid}  %t   %p   %d{%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S,%Q}   %c   %m%n
log4j.appender.R1.layout.TimeZone=GMT
Per the line with log4j.appender.R1.File, a file called ClientDebugLog.log will be created-sometime the location can differ so you may need to prefix a folder path in the parameter or do a search.

Some other thoughts - have you replaced the tm1p.ini with that of a working user's? Have you cleared out all the remnants in %temp%. Have you looked in the user's C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32 for TM1P.INI's? One of my colleagues had some "weirdness"™ and we eventually tracked it down to a rogue INI file in C:\Windows.

I've had a similar issue when CAFE or PAx was installed alongside. This is probably not the case here but here are the resolution steps for future information.

Launch Microsoft Excel
Click File > Options > Add-Ins
From the 'Manage' drop-down list select 'Excel Add-ins' and click 'Go...'
Deselect 'IBM Cognos Office Reporting BI Addin' and 'IBM Cognos Office Reporting TM1 Addin'
Click 'OK'
Click File > Options > Add-Ins
From the 'Manage' drop-down list select 'COM Add-ins' and click 'Go...'
Deselect 'IBM Framework for Office'
Click 'OK'

I had the same problem, and this solution worked perfectly for me. I am using Excel 2016 64-bit on Windows 10.
