The End Of Insight?

Post by Alan Kirk »

One can hope. One can hope even more that something better (ideally faster than frozen treacle) will replace it. I just received my invite to the Cognos User Group Xmas Function. (Yes, believe it or not I'm still invited.)

I have to admit to being impressed with the registration link which was pre-filled with my details. Entering your details evvvvverrrryyy time gets old.

They had quite a comprehensive agenda in the e-mail:
Cognos User Group Meeting & Christmas Drinks

Cognos would like to invite you to join us at the Cognos User Group meeting and Christmas Drinks to be held in Sydney on Tuesday the 9th of December.

Presentation:

A Working Approach to a Strategically Aligned Business Intelligence Solution

Darren Dadley, BI Program Manager, University of Technology, Sydney

The University of Technology (UTS) has initiated a Strategic BI Program to deliver an integrated performance management capability for UTS to support the monitoring of UTS Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and other management information. Darren Dadley from UTS demonstrates how they are approaching their Strategic solution and the steps taken to try and achieve that goal.

Cognos Update:

Integration Update

Nick Lancuba, Senior Manager Field Strategy & Support, Asia Pacific & Japan

Nick will give an overview of where Cognos fits within the IBM portfolio – including services, business partners & consulting; the existing integration points and synergies; and other software offerings IBM have that are complimentary to your Cognos implementations.

Cognos Education Update

Garry Nelson, Manager, Cognos Education Services

Garry Nelson will give us an update on what's new and what you need to know about Cognos Education.

Customer Success and Support - IBM Integration Update

Peter Dalliston, Senior Manager - Customer Success and Support Asia Pacific

Hear an update on the integration of Cognos Support to IBM Support and also the transition from support.cognos.com to ibm.com/support when it will happen and how Cognos will help you make the transition.

Cognos 8 Version 4 - Think Outside the Square

Mary-Jane Goddard, Solutions Specialist

Take a more in-depth look at Cognos 8.4 features such as:
• Cognos GO! Dashboards V’s Portal Pages
• New ideas for combining Cognos functionality
(My emphasis.) I'm guessing that this will be a replacement for Insight!, which just this once and for the last time I'll bless with its official and un-earned exclamation mark. Although I note that they've added one to the name of their dashboard. {Grinds grammatical teeth...}

If they need any help burying Insight's body so that it'll never get up, me and da boys know a good place in Nevada outside Vegas. I'll even supply a car with a sufficiently large boot...

A Working Approach to a Strategically Aligned Business Intelligence Solution
I wish they' make their ***** minds up :D

For a year or two we have Martin Richman Coggan banging on about BPM and TM1 as a company wide tool at every opportunity.

Then Cognos happen along and everything is about "the office of the finance" (sic) and BPM is a dirty word (or acronym)

Now it seems they may have realised that TM1 might just have a role outside finance within the overall business strategy again.

(Although I'll take a large bet that some suit gets up during that conference and utters the magic words "office of the finance" again as I think they think they sound kind of cool )

Tell them to go and visit their next door neighbour "Office of Idiot Control".

Well, to be fair they've managed to stay "on message" for two consecutive weeks now; as per my write-up of the Performance 2008 presentation, business-wide BPM and BI is indeed where they see themselves.

I have to admit that I didn't twig to the significance of the title. If I see the words "Strategically Aligned" in the same sentence as "Solution" (amongst many other similar expressions), my buzzword monitor goes off and my attention span shrinks like the image on one of those old fashioned televisions when the tube blows.

none of my data is financial related, and our Cognos reps know it too!
If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator.
